Still paddling

Man in a yellow kayak on calm water at Deep Cove in Vancouver with forested mountains in the background under a clear blue sky

Deep Cove. Mountains on every side. Nowhere else to be.

Deep Cove is one of those places that does not feel like it should be thirty minutes from a city. Mountains wrapping around you, water so still you can hear your own paddle hit the surface. I stopped rowing for a minute and just sat there. Sometimes the best thing you can do on a trip is stop moving and let the place catch up to you.

Steep

A tall cream ceramic mug of green tea with a teabag tag rests on a worn wooden table.

Green tea, steeped a little too long.

Green tea in a heavy cup, the tag still hanging over the side. I let it steep longer than I should have and drank it too hot anyway. Small rituals hold a day together.

Look up

Upward view of a black lamp post framed between two orange stucco buildings against a cloud brushed sky.

The small theatre that happens when you tilt your head back.

Most of a street hides above eye level, waiting for anyone bothered to look. I stopped in the middle of the block for this and got a few odd glances. Worth it.

Paper box

Green and blue painted heritage corner building with arched windows and shopfronts under a clear sky.

A heritage corner still wearing its original colours.

Someone decided this building deserved to keep its personality, and I am grateful they did. The paint has that lived quality you cannot fake with a fresh coat. Streets like this are getting rarer.

Watcher

Carved wooden figure on a concrete base stands on a waterfront lawn with a marina and sea behind.

A carved figure keeping an eye on the water.

I stood with it for a minute out of something like respect. Whoever carved it gave it a job, to face the sea and keep facing it. The marina behind carried on without noticing.

Blue hour sailing

BC Ferries vessel docked at twilight with calm blue water and distant islands under a soft evening sky on the return from Vancouver Island

Coming back from the island at the perfect time.

I always try to book the sunset return. There is something about leaving Vancouver Island when the light is fading that makes the whole trip feel complete. The water goes flat, the sky turns this cold blue, and the ferry just sits there like it is in no hurry. I stood on the deck watching this and thought yeah, this is why I keep coming back to BC. Not for the arrival. For the ride home.

Cone and calm

Bearded man in a green jacket sitting on a wooden bench under a round tree eating an ice cream cone on a sunny street on Vancouver Island with colourful storefronts behind

Ice cream, sunshine, and absolutely no agenda.

Sat down under this perfectly round tree on Vancouver Island with an ice cream cone and just watched people walk by. Pink turban, green jacket, cone in hand. No meeting to get to, no content to shoot, just a guy on a bench eating ice cream like it was the most important thing happening that afternoon. It was.

House meets House

Man in a pink turban and green jacket standing beneath The House of Chester sign on a sunny sidewalk on Vancouver Island with brick buildings and Jam Cafe in the background

Walked past a sign that felt familiar.

Walking down the street on Vancouver Island and looked up to see "The House of Chester" on a sign above me. Had to stop. Something about seeing the word "House" on a storefront while building House of Singh felt like a small nod from the universe. Camera on my chest, pink turban, summer sun. Sometimes you find signs in the most literal way.
